DESCRIPTION OF THE DEGREE PROGRAMME AND COMPETENCIES

Expertise in the Degree Programme in Elderly Care the focus is on ensuring that students become prepared and committed to the promotion of a good life for older people on the level of the individual, communities, organizations and also on the level of society. Their work with individual clients and groups involves prevention, support, care, rehabilitation and promotion of the old person’s participation in various settings of elderly care and services. Important areas in the degree programme are the assessment of aged clients' well-being, functional capacity and need for support and the well-planned use of various gerontological care and nursing interventions and social work methods and also psychosocia- and sosiocultrular methods to promote the client’s well-being and function.

The degree programme also emphasises skills required in the organization of individualized services, such as the assessment of service needs; case management; organisation of service pathways and multi-professional services for elderly clients, and supporting the clients’ families. On the level of service organisations, the focus is on the supervision of the service provision, first-level management and on the development of human resources and services. On the level of society, the emphasis is on the evaluation and development of the service provision systems and on influencing decision-making and elderly policies in society.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCY PROFILE

Completion of the studies guarantees a wide range of expertise and professional skills in elderly work. Multidisciplinary gerontological skills provide an opportunity to find employment in a variety of work environments for the elderly, such as home care, service housing, service guidance, management and development roles in both the public and private and third sectors. In the studies, it is possible to study some courses in English.

In the study as a whole, professional competencies have been taken into account, which have been developed in co-operation with all polytechnics offering gerontology education in Finland. PEDAGOGICAL ACTION MODELS

The Degree Programme in Elderly Care uses the concept of socio-constructivist learning as a pedagogical background theory. Different student-centered and experiential as well as individual and collaborative as well as exploratory learning learning methods promote student learning. Learning methods are used in many ways: theory studies as lectures, digital learning environments, small group exercises, simulation exercises and practice of different methods. Some of the studies can be carried out as online studies, distance learning and contact teaching. There is also independent study in the studies. Students can also complete their studies in SeAMK's multidisciplinary learning environment SeAMKPro and in the work-based learning environment Wellbeing Labs Student Work. Students have the possibility to include free-choice studies and optional professional studies in their studies according to their personal study plan.

Development

The curriculum is being continuously developed based on current development challenges, evidence-based knowledge and competence requirements expressed by the practice of gerontlogical social work and health care. National reports on competence needs and other information about competence needs produced through research and development are also used in curriculum development. The feedback given by the students is also taken into account in the development.

Further information

Teaching and learning will take into account the student's prior knowledge. The focus of the studies is to broaden perspectives on current developments in the field of work with older people.

Objective

Learning Outcomes are based on the General Competences of UAS Studies and on the Spesific Competences of Bachelor Degree in Elderly Care, Geronomi (AMK) in Finnish. Learning Outcomes in detail are introduced in the Study Course describtions.

The core literature for the qualification consists of legislation in the social and elderly care sector, Talentia's professional ethical guidelines for the social sector and the basic literature and other current material specified for each course.
