The aim of An Expert of Palliative Care- specialized training is to strengthen the participants’ expertise in clinical nursing or rehabilitation in palliative care client- and family-oriented service process, as well as in evidence based practice and development.
The level of target competencies have been determined in accordance with the framework of national degrees and further competencies (Finnish Act of Parliament 204/2016). An Expert of Palliative Care- specialized training stands at EQF/NQF level 6.
When reaching the competence targets for An Expert of Palliative Care- specialized training, the student:
- masters the required evidence-based, complex and advanced, multidisciplinary clinical knowledge and skills in client- and family-oriented service process;
- acts as an expert of palliative care and rehabilitation in various operational environments and multiprofessional networks;
- masters client- and family-oriented guiding methods and devices, and is able to adapt them in a renewable operational environment;
- is able to well interact with clients and their next-of-kin and to provide psychosocial support;
- is able to evaluate and develop their own and the work community’s competence and activity based on evidence;
- participates in the regional and national development and renewal of client- and family-oriented service process and modes of operation of palliative care.
This is a 30cr-specialized training. The workload for students is thus 810h. The structure of this training consists of three modules common to all, and one free-choice module, all meant to deepen the students’ expertize.

Further information
The learning and teaching premises for this specialized training is guided by the degree regulations of the University of Applied Sciences that arranges the training, as well as pedagogical and ethical principles.
The teaching methods are student-centred, focusing on students’ being active and reflecting on their learning. The development of students’ competencies is closely linked to the development of their work community. Interaction and cooperation among peer students are enabled during contact teaching as well as in electronic learning spaces.
At the beginning of the studies, each student makes a personal study plan that contains personal competence needs and multiprofessional competence development needs required at work.
Competence development is connected to both working life and regional clinical pathway development, in which case it increases both the students’ and their work communities’ competence, as well as regional cooperation and networking.
This specialized training will last about one year and is realized as multiform learning containing 12 contact days, independent learning, peer group work, various assignments and e-learning.
In case the student drops out, he/she must inform the school in writing. In order to receive the certificate for this specialized training, the student must participate to contact lessons, as well as do the assignments to acquire the necessary competencies.
The student is entitled to apply for the accreditation of their competencies if their competencies correspond to the learning goals of the specialized training programme. In case the student already has such competencies, then he/she makes an application and, after evaluation, receives recognition for those competencies. Recognition of prior competencies (RC) is done individually according to Seinäjoki UAS regulations and the learning goals specified in the specialized training programme.
