Objective

The student
*gets skills for child- and family friendly work, breastfeeding guidance, as well as protection and promotion of breastfeeding.
*is able to promote breastfeeding with the expectant and childbearing family by means of dialogic interaction, taking into account different situations.

Infant Planning Program and WHO / Unicef ??Global Strategy for Feeding Infants and Toddlers.
Breastfeeding councelor interaction skills.
Breast-feeding councelling during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding protection.
Childbirth treatment practices and breastfeeding.
Breast anatomy and physiology as well as milk secretion and its regulation.
Effective sucking and milk volumes. Assisting in breastfeeding.
Practices that support breastfeeding.
Special situations due to the child and the mother.
Breast care and possible breast and nipple problems. Breastfeeding support.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Passed
The student
- demonstrates mastery of the knowledge base of health care work and applies knowledge widely in breastfeeding counseling.
- is able to make independent decisions in different breastfeeding counseling situations.
- work is client-oriented, responsible, and safe in healthcare work.
- is able to listen, support, and guide the client and his / her family in infant nutrition.
- works safely as a public health nurse and in accordance with the principles of professional ethics.
- critically evaluates and uses evidence-based information in the development of breastfeeding counseling as part of public health nurse's work.
- acts as an expert in health care work in multidisciplinary groups and collaborative projects.
- develops her-/himself and her/his breastfeeding knowledge as part of public health nurse's work.

Failed
The student
- shows inadequate assessment and demonstration of the management of basic health care knowledge and its application in breastfeeding counseling.
- insufficiently justifies her/his actions in breastfeeding counseling situations.
- is not able to act in a sufficiently customer-oriented and customer-safe manner in healthcare work.
- has insufficient independent decision-making skills in breastfeeding counseling situations.
- does not take sufficiently account of the ethical principles of the profession in health care work.
- has insufficient capacity to participate in health care development work.
