Mechanics of materials 1Laajuus (4 cr)

Code: 8A00CK35

Objective

Students will be competent in modelling a rigid body under stress according to the principles of the strength theory. They will be able to determine the tension affecting on the body and whether or not the body can withstand the tension in question.

Content

Normal stress. Shear stress. Elasticity. Hooke’s law. Difference of a rod length and point shift. Statically indeterminate support and thermal stress. Bending stresses of a beam. Pure straight bending. Stainer’s law. Combining of tensions. Elastic line. Torsion.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student masters the basic ideas of mechanics of materials and is able to apply them on solving ordinary problems.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student knows well the basic ideas and methods of mechanics of materials and is able to apply them to solving different types of problems and is able to combine the accumulated knowledge and skills with previous experiences in the subject.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is very well familiar with the concepts and methods of mechanics of materials, and is able to apply them to a variety of different questions and problems. The student has demonstrated innovativity when applying things learned.
