Objective

Occupational and environmental safety in construction
Students are aware of occupational hazards related to working with concrete, e.g. damage to the eyes or chemical burns, and know how to prepare for the work, using proper equipment.

Competence in the construction process
Students know the ingredients of concrete and the principles of proportioning. They are familiar with the properties of fresh concrete mass, and know how to choose suitable consistency and the necessary admixtures.

Competence in repair construction
Students are familiar with the carbonation in concrete, with the related steel corrosion and cracking of concrete and with the challenges caused by frost and salt, and they know how to take these phenomena into consideration in their planning and production responsibilities.

Quality management competence
Students know the strength classification of concrete, the requirements for waterproof and frost resistant concrete and the related testing procedures. Based on the results, students are able to assess the quality of concrete.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students have a basic understanding of concrete technology. There may be minor gaps in their basic knowledge. They are familiar with the hazards associated with concrete work, their effects, the correct work equipment, and working methods. Students are familiar with the raw materials used in concrete and the properties of fresh concrete mix. They are familiar with the special requirements related to winter concreting and the carbonation phenomenon in concrete.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students are familiar with concrete strength classifications. They know how to select the appropriate stress class for concrete and they are familiar with the different properties of concrete. They are able to assess the strength development of concrete in cold and standard conditions and are familiar with the heating problems associated with concrete casting in massive structures. Students are familiar with the stresses caused by frost and salt on concrete structures and are able to take these into account in design and production tasks.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the abilities above, students master well what they have learned and can apply it. They can also analyze connections between the things they have learned.

Qualifications

No previous studies are required.
