Objective

• is familiar with the acute care service system
• is familiar with the basic components of in-hospital emergency care systems
• is able to demonstrate knowledge in wide range of patient safety measures needed in the care for the acutely ill or injured
• is able to analyze the ethical issues regarding acute care and is proficient in ethical decision-making
• is able to work as a part of a multiprofessional team and in co-operation with other authorities and emergency services
• is able to make independent decisions regarding the care of the acutely ill or injured and is able to demonstrate leadership needed to lead acute nursing teams
• is able to assess and develop his/her own wellbeing and that of his/her work community
• is able to assess hazards related to occupational safety and to mitigate those hazards in order to create a safer work environment

Content

Laws, regulations, current care recommendations, nursing recommendations. (Health Care Act, emergency )
Organization of trauma and MET activities and their protocols.
Major accident situations, multi-patient situations.
Presentation of national models and implementations of the organization of care for an acutely ill patient, e.g.
Combilance operation.
Basic concepts of patient safety in acute situations
Acts; mental health law, the law on the status and rights of the patient
Ethical principles of nursing and principles of collegiality.
HOTUS 2/2018 information sources used in nursing work in demanding decision-making situations.
Cyber ??security
Ethical principles (DNR, AND, DNaR, will to care and organ donation)
Social work - such as child protection, police, rescue service, border guard, customs, management, division of responsibilities.
CRM, ISBAR,
No technical skills such as teamwork leadership and decision making skills.

Knowledge
• The student is able to demonstrate the relevant knowledge needed in acute care. The student demonstrates critical understanding of the relevant terms, theory, foundations, interventions and ethics. The student is able to acquire and assess evidence based knowledge from different databases. The student is able to apply new knowledge and understands the fast accumulation of scientific knowledge and the development of the profession. The student understands the relevant questions related to the interface of acute care and several other professions and scientific areas. The student is able to assess the multiprofessional knowledge related to acute care in order to develop his professional area of responsibility.

• The student is able to demonstrate the core nursing skills needed in the care of the acutely ill or injured. The student is competent in the multiprofessional decision making needed in the solving of complex problems. The student is able to creatively apply evidence based knowledge in problem solving. The student is able to create, develop and take advantace of multiprofessional and -organisational networks. The student takes charge of the care of the patient and its development in his own professional community as a part of a multiprofessional team.

Mutual competences
• The student is able distribute, evaluate and constructively justify evidence based knowledge in order to develop acute care. The student takes initiative and actively re-assesses his workplace customs in order to update them. The student is able to critically assess his own knowhow and has assimilated the need to constantly develop himself and his work community. The student recognizes the future needs of acute care.

Knowledge
• The student is not able to demonstrate the relevant knowledge needed in acute care. The student is not able to acquire the evidence based knowledge and/or able to assess the relevancy and usefulness of this knowledge in the care of the acutely ill or injured.
• The minimum requirements (EFQ 6) are not met.
Skills
• The student is not able to demonstrate the core nursing and problem solving skills needed in the care of the acutely ill or injured. The student’s ability to develop and work in multiprofessional networks is insufficient. The student’s ability to develop acute care in his organization as a part of a multiprofessional team is inadequate.
• The minimum requirements (EFQ 6) are not met.

Mutual competences
• The student is unable to demonstrate knowledge of the mutual competences. The student takes no initiative and charge of the evaluation and updating of the professional customs of the care of the acutely ill or injured in his workplace. The student’s ability to understand future challenges is limited.
