Strength of Materials for Construction Site Managers (4cr)

Course unit code: 8H00DB05

General information

Credits
4 cr

Objective

Competence in structural engineering
Students know how to determine stresses of simple bar structures and to apply tables to define the maximum bending of beams in simple situations. Students are familiar with typical stability phenomena, e.g. various types of buckling.

Competence in the construction process
Students are familiar with the strength behavior of basic structures on construction sites.

Content

- normal stress
- strain
- coefficients of materials
- Hooke's law
- shear stress
- impact of temperature change
- stress caused by bending
- statically indetermined bar structure
- beam deflection
- buckling

Qualifications

Geometry in Construction Engineering, Statics for Construction Site Managers.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students are able to calculate the normal stress in a tensioned and compressed rod. They are able to calculate the bending and shear stress in a simply loaded beam.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students are able to calculate the normal stresses in the members of a truss structure. They are able to calculate the bending and shear stresses in a beam loaded with point and uniform loads. They can determine the deflections of beams using the formulas given in beam tables.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students are able to calculate normal, bending, and shear stresses in the most common building structures. They are also able to use approximation methods to check their results.
