Objective

The student is familiar with the background of patient guidance ( patient education/ counselling). The student knows how to plan, implement and evaluate a guidance process.The student is able to use various methods and written, visual and online materials in patient guidance.

Content

The background and principles of patient guidance (patient education/counselling). Conceptions of learning, guidance and teaching processes. Methods and virtual services in patient guidance.

The student
- has a surface understanding of the concept of patient guidance (patient education/ counselling) and of factors that influence the quality of guidance, and he/ she is able to use some guidance methods
- in the written assignment: can analyse guidance, but the description is too brief and cursory from the perspective of the profession
- uses irrelevant, few or old sources of information
- is not able to combine knowledge
- is able to report the seminar assignment as agreed
- mainly follows the instructions when writing seminar assignments, but the report does not fully meet the criteria defined in Seinäjoki UAS Guidelines on written assignments
- reads the presentation mainly from paper, pays little attention to the audience and uses no visual aids or the aids do not support the presentation
- demonstrates a half-hearted attitude towards patient guidance

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student
- is familiar with the concept of patient guidance (patient education/ counselling) and factors that influence the quality of guidance, and the/ she is able to use evidence-based guidance methods
- in the written assignment: can analyse guidance in relation to the learning objectives of the course and present connections with the profession
- is able to argue for the choice of information sources and for the use of expert and empirical knowledge
- reports the seminar assignment logically and clearly according to the instructions
- writes good Finnish and observes the Seinäjoki UAS Guidelines on written assignments
- gives the presentation in a natural manner, pays attention to the audience and uses at least one visual aid to support the presentation; partly reads from paper
- demonstrates a positive attitude towards patient guidance

The student
- understands the concept of patient guidance (patient education/ counselling) and factors that influence the quality of guidance, and is able to apply evidence-based guidance methods to nursing practice
- in the written assignment: extensively analyses guidance as part of a larger framework of the profession
- seeks research information and nursing guidelines on patient guidance
- evaluates the knowledge critically and constructively
- argues for the choice of information sources and for the use of expert and empirical knowledge
- reports the seminar assignment creatively, logically and clearly (using illustrative tables or figures)
- demonstrates independent, critical and creative thinking and expertise in the profession
- writes good, clear Finnish and observe the Seinäjoki UAS Guidelines on written assignments
- gives the presentation in a natural manner, pays attention to the audience and uses several appropriate visual aids to support the presentation
- demonstrates that he / she is competent and familiar with patient guidance.

Fail = 0
The student
- is not familiar with the concept of patient guidance (patient education/ counselling) and its role in nursing practice
- does not recognise factors that influence the quality of patient guidance and is unable to name guidance methods
- in the written assignment: analyses guidance, but does not relate it to the learning objectives of the course/ instructions, nor does he/ she adequately comprehend the concept
- does not observe instructions on reporting the seminar assignment
- is not able to give the presentation
