Objective

Under supervision, the student will be competent in identifying needs of patients and their families and in planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting nursing care. The student will know the structure of the service provision system, the collaborating authorities and typical service pathways for various client groups in acute and critical situations. The student will learn to give oral reports under supervision. The student will also be competent in dealing with patients in various life situations. The student will become familiar with the principles of patient-oriented, resource-based and multi-professional nursing of patients and their families. The student will utilize information and nursing technology and equipment. The student will apply ethical guidelines and principles to nursing in acute and critical situations.

Content

Care and service provision system for acutely and critically ill patients, main concepts and different care situations. Acute and critically ill patient; Assessment of the patient's status, planning and implementation of the nursing care. Triage in emergency care and disasters. Securing patient´s vital functions in acute and critical problems. Nursing intensive care patients on a ventilator. Nursing cardiac patients in CCU. Written and oral information and documentation in nursing acutely and critically ill patients.

Medical and infectious disease nursing, palliative care and client with disabilities nursing
Surgical, perioperative and gynaecological nursing

- is able to describe some elements in the care and service provision system for acutely and critically ill patients, including collaboration between authorities
- under supervision, recognises changes and problems in vital functions and knows how to carry out nursing interventions to help patients with respiratory or cardiac failure
- under supervision, is competent to plan and carry out safely intravenous fluid and drug care of acutely and critically ill patients
- under supervision, is competent to apply nursing technology and to give reports
- under supervision, is competent to encounter acutely and critically ill patients and their families
- under supervision, knows how to counsel acutely and critically ill patients

The student

- recognises changes and problems in vital functions and know how to carry out nursing interventions to help patients with respiratory or cardiac failure

- under supervision, is competent to apply nursing technology and to give reports
- is competent to encounter acutely and critically ill patients and their families professionally
- knows how to counsel acutely and critically ill patients

- does not fully observe asepsis
- jeopardises his/her own safety and the patient's
- repeatedly makes mistakes in drug and fluid care
- avoids nursing and learning situations
- does not seek contact with patients
- despite feedback, dresses and behaves inappropriately
- does not respect confidentiality
