Objective

The student is able to discuss with a pregnant family breastfeeding and the importance of starting breastfeeding. He/ she can guide and support a mother and family for successful breastfeeding or, if necessary, guide and support a non-breastfeeding mother.

Maternity management practices and breastfeeding. Breast anatomy and physiology, and milk secretion and regulation. Suction product and effective sucking, amounts of milk. Assistance in breastfeeding. Breastfeeding policies. Characteristics of the child and mother. Breast care and possible breast and breast problems. Breastfeeding support.

Teaching methods
Interactive lectures, exercises, cases, independent study. The course includes a breastfeeding counselling demonstration.

Participation in group activities and passing the exam (60% of the maximum).
Successful completion of the breastfeeding counselling demonstration.

Fail:
The student has absences of more than 80%.
Failure to complete the assignments, test failed.
Absence of breastfeeding screening.

Grade 1- 2
The student
- demonstrates and manages the basic knowledge of the different aspects of health care work
- seeks information and justifies the use of data sources in health care
- justifies the action with evidence-based information for the development of health care
- is capable of independent decision-making in different situations and operating environments in health care
- operates in a customer-oriented and customer-friendly manner in health care
- is able to guide individual clients and their families in healthcare
- is able to promote group health
- works safely and in accordance with the principles of professional ethics of a nurse in health care
- acts as a health care expert in multidisciplinary groups
- is able to develop himself/herself professionally

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Grade 3-4
The student
- demonstrates the management of the knowledge base of different areas of health care and applies information widely in health care
- is capable of independent decision-making in different health care situations and environments
- operates in a customer-oriented, responsible and safe manner in health care
- is able to listen, support and guide individual clients and their families in health care
- is able to promote group health
- acts as a nurse in accordance with the principles of professional ethics and safety
- evaluates and critically uses evidence-based information for health care development
- acts as a health care expert in multidisciplinary groups and projects
- is able to develop himself/herself and health care activities

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Grade 5
The student
- demonstrates the wide-ranging management of the knowledge base of the various areas of health care and expertly applies it in health care
- is capable of independent decision-making in different health care situations and environments
- works according to the needs of the client and his/her family in health care
- is able to listen, support and guide the client and his/ her family in health care
- demonstrates the management of individual, group and community health promotion methods
- assumes responsibility for the overall care and service process of the client in health care
- independently searches for evidence-based information, uses it and assesses it critically in health care and its development
- is able to develop himself/herself and health care activities in accordance with the principles of professional ethics and safety
- develops activities as a health care expert in multidisciplinary groups and projects

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Fail
The student
- demonstrates inadequate management of basic information on the various aspects of health care and their application in nursing care
- insufficiently justifies activities in health care
- is not able to operate in a customer-oriented and customer-friendly manner in health care
- has inadequate self-decision skills in health care
- does not take adequate account of ethical principles in the field of health care
- has insufficient capacity to participate in health care development work

Assessment methods and criteria

Active attendance and participation in interactive lectures.
Participation in group activities and passing the exam (70% of the maximum).
Successful completion of the breastfeeding counselling demonstration.
