Objective

Occupational and environmental safety in construction
Students are aware of occupational hazards related to working with concrete, e.g. damage to the eyes or chemical burns, and know how to prepare for the work, using proper equipment.

Competence in the construction process
Students know the ingredients of concrete and the principles of proportioning. They are familiar with the properties of fresh concrete mass, and know how to choose suitable consistency and the necessary admixtures. Students know different casting techniques and equipment , and are able to select the appropriate ones. They know how to meet the special requirements of winter concreting and are able to evaluate the strength of concrete in cold conditions. Students also know how to avoid the temperature raise problems connected with massive structure concreting. Concrete structures stressed on site are studied especially from the viewpoint strength development.

Competence in repair construction
Students are familiar with the carbonation in concrete, with the related steel corrosion and cracking of concrete and with the challenges caused by frost and salt, and they know how to take these phenomena into consideration in their planning and production responsibilities.

Quality management competence
Students know the strength classification of concrete, the requirements for waterproof and frost resistant concrete and the related testing procedures. Based on the results, students are able to assess the quality of concrete.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has the basic knowledge of concrete technology. Their knowledge may insufficient to some extent. The student knows the risks, their effects, the right equipment, and the work methods. The student knows the raw materials of concrete and the principles of batching. They know the properties of fresh concrete. The student knows different concrete casting methods and molds, the special requirements of winter concreting, and the carbonation of concrete.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student knows the strength categories of concrete and is able to do target and method planning for casting in place. The student is able to choose the right stress category for concrete and knows the different properties of concrete. The students is able to assess the development of the strength of concrete in cold and standard conditions and knows the heating problems related to the casting of massive structures. The student knows the stress caused by cold weather and salt to concrete structures and is able to take these requirements into account in planning and production.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student masters well what they have learned and can apply it. They can also analyze connections between the things they have learned. The student is able to make diversified analyses and draw conclusions based on what they have learned.
