Objective

Students know how to:

- explain the operational principles of the Finnish health, social and rehabilitation services and the relevant legislation, programmes and future challenges
- the rights of patients and responsibilities of professionals as regulated by data protection and confidentiality legislation
- describe how rehabilitation services have evolved and how they are governed by laws in Finland
- explain the overall system of providing rehabilitation services and can counsel their patients/clients on the use of rehabilitation services
- can verbally describe the historical development of physiotherapy practice and education
- can explain basic concepts in rehabilitation and the physiotherapist's role in multiprofessional teams

Teaching methods

The teaching methods of the course include lecture teaching, tutorial work in small groups, lesson assignments and independent assignments, practical training and virtual studies in Moodle.

Student workload

Student time use The course has 81 hours (1 cr = 27 hours). Of which 54h (2 cr) includes lecture teaching, recent work in small groups, lesson assignments as well as independent assignments and practical training. There are 27h (1 cr) courses in Moodle that can be completed independently.

Students can:

- partly explain the legislation that regulates the provision of health, social and rehabiliation services in Finland, seeing it as an integral part of society's function
- list factors that affect people's health and function in various areas of rehabilitation
- to a limited extent give a physiotherapist's job description and describe the physiotherapy process
- under supervision, safely counsel and assist patients/clients with daily activities, paying attention to clients' resources

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students can:

- explain and give examples of the legislation that regulates the provision of health, social and rehabiliation services in Finland, seeing it as an integral part of society's function
- explain factors that affect people's health and function in various areas of rehabilitation
- give a physiotherapist's job description and describe the physiotherapy process
- define the concept "evidence-based physiotherapy"
- safely counsel and assist patients/clients with daily activities, paying attention to clients' resources.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students can:

- give examples of the legislation that regulates the provision of health, social and rehabilitation services in Finland, seeing it as an integral part of society's function
- extensively explain factors that affect people's health and function in various areas of rehabilitation
- describe the wide range of expertise in physiotherapy and the physiotherapy process with help of case studies
- define the concept "evidence-based physiotherapy" and provide examples of its importance for physiotherapy practice
- safely counsel and assist patients/clients with daily activities, paying attention to clients' resources and to justifying their actions
