Objective

Students acquire a general understanding of the library network and different kinds of libraries, as well as the development and the current status of libraries. Student can present Finnish library network and its organizations. The student can identify essential library associations and organizations as well as international cooperation. Students are able to present the library and information services at Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences and to mention key sources of information for the library and information field. They know how to use library and information services.

Materials

Topic-specific material presented by teachers at the beginning of the course.

Teaching methods

Online meetings and/or recordings.
Expert guest speakers from the working world.
Learning tasks including both independent work and pair and small group work.

Employer connections

The course may include expert visits and working life-oriented learning tasks. The course includes speeches by visiting experts from working life.

Exam schedules

The course includes an online exam, the date of which will be announced at the beginning of the course.

International connections

The course also includes material in foreign languages. The course deals with the internationalization of the library and information services sector.

Student workload

Total workload of the course 162 hours.
Leena Elenius's share is 1 ECTS, or 27 hours. Satu Salmela's share is 5 ECTS, or 135 hours.
The course includes a total of approximately 20 hours of joint online meetings, in addition to scheduled and voluntary online on-call sessions and lectures by expert guests (schedules will only be confirmed in the autumn). The meetings are generally recorded, meaning the content can also be viewed at other times.

- can describe different types of library and information service organizations, their history and development
- can describe different library services and library education in Finland to some extend
- can identify some essential library associations and organization, international co-opetation possibilities

- is able to present the library and information services at Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences and to mention sources of information for the library and information field
- knows how to select sources, use databases and the Internet and how to use other relevant sources of information.
