Objective

Competence in the construction process
The student will make use of computer programmes in the designing process of steel structures.

Competence in structural engineering
Students will be competent in designing more demanding design cases. Students will be competent in designing more complicated joints for steel structures according to Eurocodes. They will also be competent in making use of plasticity in the designing process.

Content

- Resistance of steel member under combination of internal forces when stability phenomena are critical
- Resistance in local buckling
- Design of bracings in steel structures
- Designing steel connections (continuation for basics)
- Basics of fire design for steel structures
- Using computer programmes in the designing of steel structures

Materials

Eurocodes and corresponding national annexes for steel structures.

Lecturer's material.

Hitsatut profiilit EN 1993 -käsikirja, Ruukki.

Rakenneputket EN 1993 -käsikirja, Ruukki.

Teräsrakenteiden suunnittelu- ja mitoitus Eurocode 3 -oppikirja, TRY.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to use the Eurocode of steel structures in basic bar design situations and in the design of simple joints.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to use the Eurocode of steel structures in basic bar design situations, the design of joints, and fire protection design.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to apply the Eurocode of steel structures very well in the design of different bar structures, the design of joints, fire protection design, and in design in the presence of combined stress factors, paying attention to the stability of the structures.
