Objective

After completing this course, students will be able to: • demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the main theories and practices of foreign direct investment and issues that foreign investors have to concern when doing business in emerging markets • discuss the major changes in the world trade system and international business environment and draw implications for emerging markets • explain the specific features of emerging markets and the opportunities as well as challenges facing foreign investors in major emerging markets • analyse and evaluate appropriate strategies for firms to operate in emerging markets

Content

•As a fundamental component of the module, this introductory course will provide students with an appreciation of the additional complexities, opportunities and challenges in doing business in emerging markets. • This course will introduce students to the key theories and tools of evaluating countries, industries and firms in the emerging market context. • These theories and tools will then be applied in the follow-up area courses in the module.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student can demonstrate partial or uncritical knowledge and understanding of some theories and practices of foreign direct investment (FDI) and issues that foreign investors have to concern when doing business in some emerging markets The student can discuss some changes in the world trade system and international business environment and relate them to some emerging markets The student can shortly or superficially explain certain features of emerging markets and the opportunities as well as challenges facing foreign investors in some emerging markets The student can identify some strategies for firms to operate in some emerging markets The student has reached the aims of core competence regarding emerging markets. The student can work in different professional jobs related to emerging markets.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student can demonstrate a substantial understanding of the major theories and practices of foreign direct investment (FDI) and issues that foreign investors have to concern when doing business in emerging markets The student can discuss major changes in the world trade system and international business environment and reflect them on emerging markets The student can explain major features of emerging markets and the opportunities as well as challenges facing foreign investors in emerging markets The student can adequately analyze relevant strategies for firms to operate in emerging markets The student can apply the theories and knowledge regarding emerging markets in professional jobs.

The student has the competence to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and a thorough understanding of theories and practices of foreign direct investment (FDI) and issues that foreign investors have to concern when doing business in emerging markets The student has the competence to critically discuss a variety of changes in the world trade system and international business environment and draw insightful implications for emerging markets The student has the competence to critically explain the specific features of emerging markets and the opportunities as well as challenges facing foreign investors in emerging markets The student has the competence to critically analyze and rigorously evaluate appropriate strategies for firms to operate in emerging markets The student can work in diverse and international jobs concerning emerging markets.
