Objective
The main aim of the course is that the student:
- understands the importance of English language skills, interaction, and communication as part of professional competence.
- recognizes their own role as a communicator in health care and physiotherapy in patient and client situations.
Upon completing the course, the student:
- is able to ask questions related to a person’s current and previous functional ability and well-being during an interview to support successful treatment and examinations.
- is able to instruct different clients in essential therapeutic exercises.
- can communicate orally and in writing in English within a multidisciplinary work community in tasks typical for physiotherapists.
- understands and can make use of texts and articles related to physiotherapy.
- is able to further develop their language skills in their area of specialization using various learning tools.

Moodle learning space and contact lessons. Attendance at least 80%.
Exam schedules
The oral exam part will be arranged in two parts: the seminar presentations and the educational sessions together with MRN25 group.
Written exam at the end of the course (at school or EXAM space).

The student
- is able to communicate understandably in simple, routine interaction situations.
- can give simple oral instructions to clients, and written instructions when necessary.
- can ask clients for essential information related to their current and past health status and life situation.
- is able to use basic physiotherapy vocabulary.
- understands the main points of physiotherapy texts relevant to their own tasks, using a dictionary if needed.
Other
The student:
- understands the importance of professional English skills and works to develop language skills in their specialty area according to their own level and learning needs.
- has made progress during the course, taking their individual starting point into account.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student
- is able to communicate clearly in key multi-professional and multicultural interaction situations (e.g., phone conversations, oral and written reporting, documentation).
- can give and justify individual instructions in common guidance situations.
- gathers information about the client’s current and past health status, life situation, and lifestyle, and asks clarifying questions when necessary.
- is able to use essential physiotherapy terminology and concepts.
- acquires information from physiotherapy publications, reports, and guidelines to update and develop professional competence.
- understands the main points and most details of physiotherapy texts without the use of aids.
- is able to critically evaluate sources and materials and apply what they have read.
- understands and can apply the information they have read.
- conveys messages to listeners or readers understandably without misunderstandings and almost idiomatically (H4).
- conveys messages to listeners or readers understandably without misunderstandings, but with some influence from Finnish in the output (H3).

The student works independently and actively to develop language skills in their specialty area, according to their own level, language learning needs, and personal interests.

The student
- is able to communicate skillfully even in demanding multi-professional and multicultural interaction situations (e.g. reporting, documentation, meetings, negotiations, and feedback discussions).
- interviews and instructs clients with confidence, adapting their communication style to the situation and to the client, including in challenging or unexpected client encounters.
- is able to use advanced physiotherapy terminology and concepts.
- makes use of physiotherapy-related articles and other professional publications to develop their work.
- reads demanding physiotherapy texts fluently and is able to critically evaluate sources and materials.
- understands both the main points and details of texts and is able to apply and explain what they have read.
- communicates fluently, idiomatically, and in a manner appropriate to the situation.
Other
The student
- works independently and actively to develop language skills in their specialty area, according to their own level and interests.
- continues to develop their language proficiency throughout the course.

Upper secondary school English syllabus or an equivalent level.

• ymmärtää englannin kielen taidon, vuorovaikutuksen ja viestinnän merkityksen osana ammattitaitoa.
• tiedostaa oman roolinsa terveysalan ja fysioterapia-alan viestijänä potilas- ja asiakastilanteissa.
