Objective

The aim of the mentoring program is to support graduating students in their transition from school to working life. A mentor is searched to fit the student's needs and desires. E.g. if a student is interested in leadership, a mentor is searched among people in supervisory positions. For a student who is interested in the banking sector, a mentor searched among banking professionals etc. If the student’s interests and needs are not clear, they will get an experienced mentor to get a clearer picture of their own field.
Students will get their own mentor who has at least 3 years of work experience. Through the mentoring program, the student can grow their working life network. The student can ask their mentor about work, job searching, writing a CV, career, education opportunities etc.

Content

The idea of the mentoring is old and simple; a more experienced person shares expertise and knowledge to a less experienced person. Mentoring is talking between the mentor and the student: encouraging and sharing experiences. Student can ask their mentor about working life, job searching, writing a CV, career, education opportunities etc. Mentors can tell about their own experiences and success, but also about the possible setbacks. The student gets an experienced conversational partner and has the right to ask, wonder and think about e.g. uncertainties related to working life.
Mentoring is pair work supported by three common meetings and smaller meetings. The purpose of the meetings is to network with other participants as well as share experiences and ideas with other mentor partners.

Materials

Support material is provided via Moodle.

Teaching methods

The course is mainly based on the meetings with the mentor. Meetings are not tied to the timetables. The process includes three common meetings where the participants have the opportunity to network with each other. Meetings always include an educational section related to working life skills. The exact dates for all common meetings are announced separately.

Common meetings are usually held in the evenings from 17:00 onwards.

Student workload

Student will get 1-2 credits from the mentoring program. Student has to keep a learning diary about mentoring. Active participation has also influence in the credits.
There are three common meetings: kickoff meeting in October, mid-term meeting in January and the closing event in April.
Appointment schedules and a contact method will be agreed between the mentor and the student. Meetings with the mentor are held approximately once a month and meetings last usually about one and half an hour.
