Building ConstructionLaajuus (5 cr)

Code: RAK2G1

Objective

Occupational and environmental safety in construction
Students understand and consider occupational safety on construction site.

Competence in the construction process
Students are competent in starting a construction project, they know common frame structures, the related practices and quality requirements. Students know how structural members of frames and custom structures are constructed. They are familiar with supplementary structures and their quality requirements. Students have knowledge of surface treatments and materials, they know the working conditions and the quality technology of a finished building.

Competence in structural engineering
Students are familiar with the regulations on fire resistance, sound insulation and heat insulation.

Content

- Fire resistance of buildings and building materials
- Heat and sound insulation requirements
- Foundations
- Base floor structures
- Frame structures: wood, concrete, masonry, steel
- Supplementary structures: non-load-bearing structures, windows, doors, fixtures, roofs and facades
- Custom structures
- Site visits

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has the basic knowledge of building construction, yet possibly with some minor imperfections. The student knows the risks in building construction, their effects, the right outfit, and the work methods. The student knows the starting assignments at the building site and the common foundation and frame structure solutions, work assignments and quality requirements. The student knows the building regulations concerning fire safety categories, sound insulation, and thermal insulation. The student knows the machinery and equipment used.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student knows the basics and key working methods of building construction. The student masters the modes of implementation and the solutions of structures based on usual foundations, framework, and roof covering. The student knows the completing elements of a building and their quality requirements. The student knows surface materials, the right working conditions, and their effects on the quality of building. The student knows the classification of an emergency center.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the abilities above, the student has a good command of what they have learned and is able to apply it. They are also able to analyze connections between the things they have learned. The student is able to make diversified analyses and draw conclusions based on what they have learned.
