A night in the hospital-free choice studies (2cr)

Objective

Student will learn clinical hand skills, clinical decision-making, ethics, multi-culture. The student will support his/her own and peers’ professional skills by simulating and reflecting. ABCDE protocol, NEWS, ISBAR, targeted communication. And to support the patient and his/her next-of-kin.

Content

Come to simulations that you will never forget. Every one of the student who participates on this course will get one or more patient for a night shift, or he/she can be a patient actor. After evening report, the patients are divided for the students’ according to the credits that students have completed. During the night shift, you will learn clinical hand skills, clinical decision-making, ethics, multi-culture. In the night shift you will support your own and your peers’ professional skills by simulating and reflecting. Do you already know what is ABCDE protocol, what does the NEWS mean, can you report by using the ISBAR protocol and do you use targeted communication in acute situations, are you able to support the patient and his/her next-of-kin?

Materials

Teachers will give the material. Simulations will be suitable for all students and can be planned the way that student's previous experiences are taken into account.

Student workload

2ECTS=54h of which 16 hours contact lessons. Student has to study Moodle independently and the student is in responce that he/she is able to work as a registered nurse the whole night shift.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Compulsory attendance: 1x4 hours lessons and one 13 hours lasting night shift, independent study on Moodle and learner’s diary. Dates: Lessons Thursday 9th of May (afternoon), Night shift from Friday 24th to Saturday 25th of May from 19.00 to 8.00. From students who are taking part on this course are expected absolute confidentiality as in all simulations.

Further information

During the night shift other students are your colleagues. You will take care of the patients the whole night shift. Take some food with you and also you will need a good attitude. You will not get any sleep during the night shift!
