Objective

Students will be competent in designing steel structures in ultimate and serviceability limit states according to the eurocodes. Students will be competent in designing joints for steel structures according to eurocodes. They will make use of computer programmes in the designing process.

Content

- Steel as building material
- Strength and elastic properties of structural steel
- Steel grades
- Cross-section classes
- Resistance of cross-section under tension, compression, bending, shearing and torsion
- Resistance of cross-section under combination of internal forces
- Designing for deflection
- Resistance in case of stability phenomena as buckling and lateral torsional buckling
- Basics of designing bolted connections
- Basics of designing welded connections
- Using computer programmes in the designing of steel structures

Materials

Eurocode EN 1993. Lecturer’s own material.

Teaching methods

Lectures, calculation exercises and homework.

Student workload

Total work load of the course: 133 h

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to use the eurocode for steel structures in a simple basic dimensioning situation. The student is able to define the cross-section class.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to use the eurocode for steel structures in the dimensioning of different bar structures.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to apply very well the eurocode for steel structures in the dimensioning of different bar structures, paying attention to the stability of the structures.
