Objective

Students will be aware of the most common construction materials and how they are used. They will understand the relations between material selection and production methods. Students will know the more common production methods and machinery used in the field of engineering and know how to evaluate the suitability of a chosen production method.

Content

Types of materials and principles of material selection, internal structure of metals, phase diagrams, production of steel, classical heat treatment processes, steel standards, properties and use of non-ferrous metals, properties and use of plastics and plastic composites, properties and use of ceramics, overview to production methods, casting techniques, welding techniques, fundamentals of metal machining, introduction to NC technology

Teaching methods

Interactive lessons, laboratory assignments and exercises.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

A satisfactory grade is reached by accomplishing both the laboratory assingnments and seminars and by mastering the fundamental issues of the contents.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

A good grade requires the ability to solve rather simple problems of material and manufacturing technology.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The requirements of excellent grade are still higher, the student must be able to show a deep and comprehensive understanding of the role of material and manufacturing technology as a part of the industrial world.

Qualifications

No previous studies are required.
