Objective

Competence in the construction process
Students know the principles of the standards concerning structural design.

Competence in the structural engineering
Students understand framed systems, how they work and the criteria for choosing an appropriate framed system for a building. Students are able to determine the loads acting on buildings and structures. Students are familiar with the design principles of load bearing structures.

- structural design tasks and the design process
- building frame systems and load-bearing structural elements
- frames according to building type and building material
- transfer of loads from one building element to another
- structural loads
- load combinations

Materials

Eurocodes for basis of structural design and actions of structures. National documents for applying the Eurocodes as applies.

Total work load of the course: 107 h

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students are able to solve assignments related to the basics, which are similar to the assignments dealt with during the course.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to the above-mentioned, students are able to use the basics included in the course and to apply them in different assignments, and to give reasons for their solutions.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the above-mentioned, students have a comprehensive understanding of the things included in the course. They are able to choose the right methods to problems related to the topicis dealt with during the course and give reasons for their solutions in a logical way.

Qualifications

Recommended background knowledge: Building Construction, Statics.
