Objective

Students will be competent in designing steel structures in ultimate and serviceability limit states according to the eurocodes. Students will be competent in designing joints for steel structures according to eurocodes. They will make use of computer programmes in the designing process. The course is part of the theoretical training required of A-level structural designers.

? Strength and elastic properties of structural steel
? Steel grades
? Cross-section classes
? Resistance of cross-section under tension, compression, bending, shearing and torsion
? Resistance of cross-section under combination of internal forces
? Resistance in case of stability phenomena as buckling and lateral torsional buckling
? Resistance in shear buckling
? Bracing of steel structures
? Design of bolted connections
? Design of welded connections
? Examples about steel connections
? Using computer programmes in the designing of steel structures
