Objective

COMPETENCE IN CUSTOMERSHIP IN HEALTH CARE, ETHICAL COMPETENCE

Students will analyse their personal conceptions and attitudes towards mental health and illness. They will understand the principles of client and resource-oriented mental health work in multi-professional care and know the importance of clinical work supervision for mental health professions.

COMPETENCES IN HEALTH PROMOTION AND DECISION-MAKING COMPETENCE

Students will learn to professionally help people and their families to cope with crises.

CLINICAL COMPETENCE

Students will gain an overview of mental health nursing interventions, the service delivery system and legislation.
Students will learn to support, counsel and interact with people of all ages in crisis situations.

LEARNING COMPETENCE

Students will know how to evaluate and develop their competence and learning strategies. They will learn to seek, use and evaluate knowledge critically.

Content

The course comprises the following: Mental health work, mental health nursing, and psychiatric nursing, Health-promoting, preventive, curative and rehabilitative mental health work, Mental Health Act and service delivery system, Care of individuals, groups, families and communities, Care/nursing relationship, Teamwork, Clinical work supervision, Traumatic crises, Principles of crisis intervention, Various crisis interventions.

- analyse critically their knowledge and attitudes pertaining to mental health and illness
- know how plan, implement and evaluate client- and resource- centred care relationships using evidence-based knowledge
- act professionally and actively in multi-professional teams
- are aware of the meaning of clinical work supervision in mental health nursing
- know how to competently encounter, support and counsel people of all ages on mental health issues using evidence-based knowledge
- professionally help people deal with crisis and, taking into consideration client's living environment and explaining their actions
- have an overview of and critically analyse nursing interventions, the service provision system and legislation in mental health services

Students

- to a great degree, are unable to help people deal with crisis or take into consideration client's living environment
- are not able to name nursing interventions or describe the service provision system and legislation in mental health services
