Objective

Competence in the construction process.
Students know the main features of the zoning process in Finland. They understand the basic principles of land use planning and the possibilities of the society to guide construction through urban planning. Students know the different levels of urban planning in Finland and the steps of planning. They are familiar with the fundaments of the legislation on urban planning.They are able to interpret plans and zoning ordinances from the perspective of construction. They understand the possibilities of zoning ordinances to influence the site practices, finances and quality of construction.

- land use planning and national direction system
- regional plan, master plan and town plan
- symbols on different plans
- zoning process and legislative definitions guiding it
- the possibilities of urban planning to guide construction
- land acquisition, site layout plan, street plans
- acknowledging sustainable development in urban planning

Materials

Land Use Planning and Building Law and Act in part, plan symbols and planning ordinance.
Lecturer´s own material.

Teaching methods

Lectures and independent study.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students know the different levels of zoning and the basics of the zoning process. They know how to find info from the local master plan for their building project. They know the basic principles of zoning and land use planning and how they affect construction projects.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students know the different levels of urban planning and the zoning process. They are able to find information in a town plan and apply it in different situations in working life and different construction projects. They understand the effect of urban planning on the implementation of construction projects. Students know the main features of the consequences of zoning ordinances in a construction project.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students know the different levels of urban planning and the zoning process comprehensively. They are able to find information on different plans, interpret plans and apply information from them in demanding situations in working life and construction projects. They understand the effect of urban planning on the implementation of construction projects. They know the consequences of zoning ordinances in a construction project.
