Objective

Competence in the construction process
Students can use computer programmes in dimensioning of wooden structures. They understand the special characteristics of wood on construction site.

Competence in structural engineering
Students understand the special properties of wood as a load-bearing structure. Students are able to independently perform the dimensioning of conventional load-bearing wooden structures in the ultimate and serviceability limit states. Students are able to dimension nail joints.

Content

- material properties
- basics of structural design for load-bearing timber structures
- dimensioning in the ultimate limit state for bending, shear, normal force, and torsion, as well as combined stresses
- dimensioning of beams and columns. Support pressure
- basics of joint dimensioning. Nail joint
- basics of stiffening of timber structures
- serviceability limit state dimensioning for deflection and vibration
- use of application programs in the design and dimensioning of timber structures
- laboratory exercises

Materials

Eurocode 5: Design of structural timber. National documents for applying the Eurocodes as applies.
RIL 201-1-2017:
Other material as indicated by the teacher

Teaching methods

Lectures and assignments, laboratory work. Contact lessons.

Student workload

Total work load of the course: 134 h.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students learn about the material properties of wooden structures. Students learn how to use the Eurocode for wooden structures in basic design situations involving simple beams.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students are able to apply the Eurocode for timber structures in the dimensioning of various beam structures, the dimensioning of simple connections, and combined stress cases, also taking stability into account.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students are able to apply the Eurocode for timber structures excellently in the dimensioning of various beam structures, the dimensioning of simple joints, and combined stress cases, also taking stability into account.

Qualifications

Statics, Strength of Materials, Framework Systems and Basics of Structural Design, Mathematical Analysis.
