Objective
The student understands the basic concepts of statistics and knows the basic principles and methods of data acquisition. They will be able to create a questionnaire and to input, process and report research results using various software. He/she is also able to interpret the obtained results, ready statistics and statistical surveys.
Content
- Basic concepts of statistics
- Sampling methods and experimental research
- Measurement and measurement scales
- Drawing up a questionnaire and collecting material
- Description of observation data (key figures and distributions)
- Dependency analysis (cross-tabulation and correlation)
- Presentation of results in tables and figures
- Interpretation and reporting of results
- Webropol, Excel, and SPSS for Windows statistical software for processing and analyzing research data
- Use of SPSS for Windows statistical program to process and analyze research data
Location and time
FULLY INDEPENDENT ONLINE STUDY
The studies allow for completion according to your own schedule.
Materials
Heikkilä Tarja (2014): Tilastollinen tutkimus.
Teaching methods
FULLY INDEPENDENT ONLINE STUDY:
The study is conducted online in the Moodle learning environment. The study is carried out independently at your own pace during the implementation period. The study does not include joint meetings or pair or group work.
The student familiarizes themselves with the theoretical material and completes online assignments according to the given instructions. The study requires independent work and scheduling.
Student workload
The workload of the study is designed so that one credit corresponds to an average of 27 hours of student work to achieve the learning objectives. The actual time required varies individually, e.g., due to prior knowledge.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student is able to perform satisfactorily the basic concepts of statistics, basic principles, and methods of data acquisition. The student is able to conduct a web survey with Webropol software, to input the data into SPSS software and to know the basic procedures for processing the data. He/she is able to present satisfactorily applying the results of statistical research using frequency distributions and indices and is able to perform basic analyses of the relationship between two variables. He/she can interpret the results and understand the principles of statistical reasoning.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student knows well the basic concepts of statistics, basic principles and methods of data acquisition and their application. The student is able to carry out a web survey with Webropol software, feeds data into SPSS software and is well-versed in data processing. He/she is able to present well the results of statistical research using frequency distributions and indices and is able to perform basic analyses of the relationship between two variables. The student can interpret the results and understand the principles of statistical reasoning.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student knows the basic concepts of statistics, basic principles, and methods of data acquisition and their application. The student is able to carry out a web survey with Webropol software, feeds data into SPSS software and has excellent command of data processing. He/she is able to present excellently applying the results of statistical research using frequency distributions and indices and is able to perform basic analyses of the relationship between two variables. The student can interpret the results and understand the principles of statistical reasoning.
