Objective
Upon completion of the course, students will be competent in distinguishing between the various genres of literature for children and youth. They will understand the main characteristics of the history of literature for children and youth, know the well-known authors and the works they have produced. They will be able to name the most popular works and classics (+ authors) in Europe and the Western World written for children and youth. Students will also be competent in selecting appropriate material for various situations, e.g. for book recommendations and story hours for children.
Content
Literary genres for children and youth, history and current situation in literature for children and youth, Western and European classic writers of literature for children and youth and their works, telling about the contents of and using literature for children and youth in various situations, e.g. story hours for children and book recommendations.
Location and time
The schedules for the scheduled online teaching can be found in the timetable at https://lukkarikone.seamk.fi/. Timetables are published for the next six weeks. The first six weeks of autumn are published by Midsummer and the first six weeks of spring by Christmas. Timetables may be subject to changes.
The first online meeting of the study is 4.9. at 16-18. Information of the study will be sent on week 35.
Materials
The children´s books which students have to read will be informed in the beginning of the study.
Studying requires headphones and r a webcam.
Teaching methods
The study is conducted online in the Moodle learning environment and it requires participation in scheduled online teaching. The recordings of the teaching sessions are also available for later viewing in Moodle. The study includes pair or group work and independent work online.
Student workload
Guided online meetings and groupwork 30 h, independent study 105 h.
The workload of the study is designed so that one credit corresponds to an average of 27 hours of student work to achieve the learning objectives. The actual time required varies individually, e.g., due to prior knowledge.

After the course the student is able to name the well-known authors and classics of children´s and youth literature. S/he knows the genres of children´s and youth literature. The student is able to choose suitable children´s and youth literature in different kinds of situations and actions in library.

After the course the student is able to name and evaluate the well-known authors and classics of children´s and youth literature. S/he knows the genres of children´s and youth literature and is able to classify books to genres. The student is able to choose and recommend suitable children´s and youth literature in many ways in different kinds of situations and actions in library.

Excellent (5)
In addition to previous criteria the student is able to create new and inspiring ways of introducing children´s and youth fiction and tell about the books.
