Objective

Competence in structural engineering
Students know the materials and products used for various load-bearing timber structures, and they know how the special properties of wood affect the strength of timber structures. Students are able to determine the design values of the mechanical properties of materials, used in structural calculations, and they know the important regulations on timber structures. Students are familiar with common timber joints, and they know how to design simple mechanically built joints.

Competence in the construction process
Students are familiar with common timber frame structures, structural members and their joint and support mechanisms. Students understand the principles of bracing timber frames, their behaviour and the importance of temporary support and stability during construction.

Content

- Properties and design strengths of materials
- Design and construction drawings of simple timber structures
- Timber element systems
- Timber structures and their impact on construction work
- Management of timber construction on site (with special attention paid to stability)
- Laboratory work

Materials

Eurocodes/regulations on timber structures (partly).

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to solve problems related to the basic content of the course that are similar to the assignments dealt with during the course.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to the above criteria, the student is able to use the basic content of the course and apply them in different assignments, as well as give reasons for their solutions.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the above criteria, the student has a comprehensive understanding of the content of the course. They are able to choose the right methods to solve problems related to the course content and to give reason for their solutions in a logical way.
