Objective

The student
- is able to use nursing interventions to respond to the patients' nursing needs and to implement structured documentation using structured classification.
- is able to apply the principles of preventing infections and explain why this is important in clinical nursing.
- is able to assess resources of patients and next-of-kin from different cultural backgrounds and support them in planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care.
- knows how to act in common first aid and life support situations.
- is able to plan, implement and evaluate evidence-based nursing interventions.
- takes a rehabilitation and resource-centered approach to his/her work with patients and family members of all ages.
- can assess needs for care using appropriate clinical and physiological tools or instruments, prioritize the findings and enter them into the structured documentation system.
- is able to plan, implement and evaluate patients' drug care.
- can implement Finnish nutritional guidelines.
- understands the principles of safety management and sustainable development, and is aware of his/her responsibility in promoting these principles at the workplace.

Content

Practical training in clinical nursing settings which allow students to practice basic client-centered clinical nursing. Writing and presenting an assignment. eDrug Care Certificate.

All material from first year courses

Workseed, medication passport, hour schedule must be filled according to teachers' instructions.

Teaching methods

Clinical training in the basic care nursing environment
Clinical training hours: 175 h

The student follows the clinical nurse supervisor’s shifts in the clinical training placement and keeps the supervisor informed.
The student demonstrates the ability to work as a registered nurse student in patient care and practices both clinical skills and communication with patients and staff members. The student plans, implements, and evaluates patient care.

The student follows Finnish working life rules and informs the training placement and supervising teacher of any absences due to illness or other reasons. Hours missed during clinical training must be replaced according to the supervising teacher’s instructions.

Drug calculations from the course medication management and drug calculations must be passed before entering into clinical training,

Training hours are approximately 35 hours per week. However, depending on the clinical supervisor’s shifts, the actual hours may be slightly less or more. Clinical training hours must not exceed 40 hours in any training week.

Completion alternatives

With practical nurses work experience (at least one year work experience after graduation) it is possible to get partially recognition of this clinical training. Recognition is not given based on care assistant's or personal assistant's work experience.

7 ECTS = 189 hours, of which 175 hours is done in clinical training placement. Rest is for written assignment and reflection held at school after the clinical training

- is active in practicing Finnish language skills
- follows working life rules
- achieves all clinical training hours
- does assignments according to teacher's instructions

The student
- does not know how to seek information required in individual situations in client-centered clinical nursing.
- cannot demonstrate the ability to use the knowledge base of client-centered clinical nursing.
- does not make a difference between everyday knowledge and evidence-based knowledge in client-centered clinical nursing.
- is not competent to work in individual client-centered clinical nursing situations even though instructed.
- cannot demonstrate awareness of the ethical principles for registered nurses in client-centered clinical nursing.
- is not competent to work as a member of a team or to share his/her knowledge in client-centered clinical nursing.
- is unable to analyze his/her strengths or development needs in client-centered clinical nursing.
- does not follow Finnish working life rules.
