Content scheduling

Preparations for surgery, assessment of the patient after surgery, pain management, wound care and nursing of different kinds of surgical patients. Skills and knowledge how to use different materials and equipment in surgical nursing.

Objective

The student:
- understands the perioperative process and knows the roles of the perioperative and surgical nurses.
- is capable of working in a multi-professional team, and is able to consider the patient's individuality.
- can search evidence-based knowledge and use it in planning, implementing, and evaluating surgical and perioperative patients’ care.
- can prepare the patient for different surgical procedures.
- can act aseptically at different stages of perioperative and surgical patients’ care.
- knows basic anesthesia methods and basic drugs and fluids used in intraoperative care.
- recognizes most typical instruments and surgical methods.
- knows the use of equipment in theatres and recovery room and understands the importance of patient safety in perioperative care.
- knows how to assess, monitor and act according to the patients condition during the postoperative phase.
- is competent in common nursing interventions and diagnostic examinations used as part of surgical nursing.
- knows how to support and promote surgical and perioperative patients' and their next-of-kin's health, self-care, rehabilitation, and ability to function.
- understands the principles of sustainable development in perioperative and surgical care.

- Perioperative process and role of the nurse in multiprofessional team
- Preoperative preparation of the patient
- Asepsis in surgical and perioperative environment
- Anesthesia methods and monitoring of anesthetized patient in the operation theatre and recovery room
- Basic instruments and equipment in the operating theatres
- Drug and fluid care during perioperative process
- Postoperative assessment and acting according to the patient needs
- Pain management of the perioperative patient
- Wound care of surgical and perioperative patients
- Documentation and reporting
- Counselling of the patient and next- of-kin
- Patient safety (physical and physiological), nurse’s occupational safety

- understands postoperative assessment and nursing interventions during the postoperative process.

- understands the importance of patient safety and continuity of care in perioperative care.

- knows the roles and tasks of perioperative and surgical nurses.
- is able to work in a multi-professional team and understands different roles and the importance of teamwork.
- knows the importance of aseptics in perioperative process and is able to act according to the aseptic rules.
- knows preoperative preparation and understand the differences between different patient groups.
- knows different anesthesia methods and understand their suitability for different patient groups.
- knows how to handle basic surgical instruments and equipment in different phases of operations.
- knows the infusions and medications and their effects used during the anesthesia.
- understand widely postoperative assessment and nursing interventions during the postoperative process.
- is able to guide patients and their next-of-kin diversely during the perioperative process in different kind of operations.
- understands widely the importance of patient safety and continuity of care in perioperative care.
