Objective

Students can use their oral and written communication skills, and they will be motivated to continue their language studies independently in the future.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student:
- is able to manage in routine, oral and written interaction in multi-professional work environments (for example e-mail, the filling of forms, writing a CV, presentation of working unit)
- is able to provide simple, oral and, when needed, written instructions for clients/ groups
- is able to ask patients/ clients the necessary information related to the present and previous physical condition/ life situation and is able to record the patient’s / client’s provided answers for the success of the treatment or follow-up procedures
- is able to understand professional texts related to his/her working field
- grammar mistakes appear when using English, which makes communication difficult and can lead to misunderstandings and repetition
- is able to use basic health care related professional vocabulary so that the necessary information is conveyed to the listener and reader
- pronunciation is intelligible, though inaccuracies may appear regarding special professional vocabulary
- is able to find the needed information from the texts which deal with familiar subjects and relies on instruments generally used in communication situations

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student:
- is able to communicate orally and in writing to multi-professional groups in typical situations (for example phone conversations, external consultations, oral and written reporting, oral presentation such as insurance documents)
- is able to explain and justify individual patient instructions, as well as provide information on the most common procedures and investigations
- is able to clarify the patient’s/ client’s present and previous health condition/ life situation, ask relevant questions if needed, record the patient’s/ client’s provided answers so that the treatment or follow-up procedures are successful, and answers to the client’s/ patient’s questions
- is able to use English mostly accurately and correct his/her own language mistakes in case they lead to misunderstandings
- is able to use health care related vocabulary and professional vocabulary of his/her own field quite well
- strives to communicate in a situation according to the required way and is able to pronounce quite accurately and naturally
- is able to find the main aspects of various professional texts when reading
- is able to use different strategies to support communication

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student:
- is able to communicate in English clearly and in a target-oriented manner, both orally and in writing, in demanding communication situations in multi-professional and multicultural working environments (for example meetings, health care negotiations, feed-back discussions)
- is able to present various alternatives naturally and complexly in client/patient counseling situations taking into consideration the patient’s/ client’s cultural background
- is able to interview the patients/ clients in the required professional manner expected in a specific situation, and is able to communicate in demanding and unexpected client/patient situations in a professional way
- is able to use complex language structures almost flawlessly, and use accurately a rich professional language, including terminology of his/her specific professional field
- is able to pronounce accurately and naturally, to communicate in the manner required in a specific professional situation
- is able to quickly picture the contents of a text in order to critically evaluate reliability of a source
- is able to use various ways to support communication
