Objective

Students are aware of the background of various phenomena in society. They are able to describe the background of social problems, health sociology and social change. They can promote their interaction skills by focusing on the history of the clients' life course. Students can take part in discussion about society and they are able to seek information about how to influence decision-making in society. As part of their nursing competence, they are familiar with the social security system.

Content

Social problems and abnormal behaviour, health sociology, social change, the development of Finnish society from early 1900's until today, the welfare society, the social security system in Finland

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1-2 Students
- attend lectures and demonstrate their understanding of central themes
- are able to discuss the most important perspectives in a relevant manner
- know the main parts of the Finnish social security system and have adequate knowledge to be able to work in nursing duties
- know the central health care and social services and the regulations and laws

Assessment criteria, good (3)

3-4 Students
- have understood the themes included in the study material and are able to produce opinions on related problems
- are able to produce interpretations indicative of social imagination
- know the main parts of the Finnish social security system and are able to produce justified opinions on related problems
- have understood the system of the health care and social services as a part of Finnish society

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students
-are able to critically discuss the themes included in study material
-are able to produce justified opinions and interpretations of the themes and look at issues in their social context
-know how to counsel their clients on social security issues
-are able to make an informed contribution to the civil dialogue on the development of social policy
- are able to guide the clients in the using of health care and social services
