Objective
Competence in the construction process
The student can use computer programmes in dimensioning of wooden structures. The student understands the special characteristics of wood on construction site.
Competence in structural engineering
The student is able to design common load-bearing timber structures. They know how to determine the static model of the structures and are able to make load combinations to be examined at the ultimate limit state and at the service limit state using Eurocodes. The student knows the distinctive properties of wood when dimensioning load-bearing wooden structures. The course is part of the theoretical training required of A-level structural designers.
Content
- Properties of materials
- Structural designing of load-bearing timber structures
- Static models of structures and actions of structures
- Massive beams, columns, glued, thin-laminated beams, double tapered beams and single tapered beams, wooden trusses
- Design at the ultimate limit state for bending, shear and normal force, as well as for combined stresses
- Desing of connections
- Bracing of timber structures
- Design at the service limit state for bending and vibration
- Utilising software in designing and dimensioning wooden structures
- Laboratory work
