Objective

Competence in structural engineering
Students know how to determine stresses of simple bar structures and to apply tables to define the maximum bending of beams in simple situations. Students are familiar with typical stability phenomena, e.g. various types of buckling.

Competence in Construction Production
Students know how to assess the behavior of site structures with special attention given to the strength of the materials and to employee safety.

Content

- Normal stress
- Strain
- Coefficients of materials
- Hooke's law
- Shear stress
- Impact of temperature change
- Stress caused by bending
- Stress caused by twisting
- Statically indetermined bar structure
- Various types of buckling

Materials

Lecturer’s own material.

Teaching methods

Lectures, calculation exercises and homework.

Evaluation scale

1-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to solve the normal stress of a drawn and pressed bar. They are able to calculate the bending and shear stress of a simply stressed beam.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to solve the normal stress of the bars of a truss structure. They are able to calculate the bending and shear stress of a beam stressed with point loads and uniformly distributed loads. They are able to define the bending of beams using equations presented in bar tables.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to solve the normal, bending, shear and twisting stress of the most common structures in house construction. They are also able to utilize approximation methods to check the results obtained.

Assessment methods and criteria

Final examination, assessment 0-5.
