Objective

The student is capable of working in a multi-professional team, and is able to consider the patient's age, growth and development stage. The student is able to assess the resources of patients and their relatives coming from different cultural backgrounds. In addition, the student is able to take this assessment into consideration when planning, implementing and evaluating the surgical, perioperative or gynecological nursing. Moreover, the student can plan, implement and evaluate nursing interventions for patients and family members of all ages facing common surgical / gynecological conditions / perioperative situations.
The student can use evidence-based implementations developed for surgical, perioperative and gynaecological nursing to help, support, and counsel patients and family members of all ages. The student knows how to act aseptically.The student can observe and manage different wounds. The student is competent in common nursing procedures and diagnostic examinations used as part of surgical, perioperative and gynaecological nursing. The student knows how to support and promote surgical, perioperative and gynecological patients' and families' health, self-care, rehabilitation and ability to function. The student is able to manage and support pain patients of all ages.

Health promotion, self-care support and rehabilitation in nursing with surgical, perioperative or gynaecological patients and their families. Nursing interventions (FinCC) in surgical, perioperative and gynaecological nursing. The national documentation model for nursing. Effica. The impact of the patient's age, sex, cultural background, growth and development stage and care and service setting on the care of acutely ill patients and their families. Assessment of nursing needs and monitoring vital functions in surgical, perioperative or gynaecological patients. Essential examinations, nursing procedures and diagnostic examinations in surgical, perioperative and gynaecological nursing. Pre, intra and postoperative nursing, rehabilitation and counselling. Asepsis in surgical, perioperative or gynaecological nursing. Pain control. Nursing, rehabilitation and counselling of injured patients. Nursing and counselling of patients and families facing a crisis. Multiprofessionalism in the care of surgical, perioperative or gynaecological patients. Counselling of patients and families. Radiation protection and radiological examinations. A safe nursing environment. Occupational safety. Surgery, anaesthesiology and gynaecological diseases.

Teaching methods

SURGICAL NURSING: lectures, skills labs, patient case assignment and simulations, independent studies
PERIOPERATIVE NURSING: interactive methods, lectures, skills labs/simulations, independent studies. Theoretical part can be done online, available on Campus Online as summer studies (May-September)
GYNECOLOGICAL NURSING: preliminary task, lectures, group work and interactive methods, independent studies

Student workload

SURGICAL NURSING: theory 8-10 h, skills labs 9-10 h and simulations 12 h, exam 2 h, independent studies
PERIOPERATIVE NURSING: Theory 10 h, skills labs/simulations 10h, independent studies
GYNECOLOGICAL NURSING: 12 hours contact teaching, varying methods

Content scheduling

SURGICAL NURSING: patient preparations for surgery, observation and assessment of the patient, guidance and counceling before and after procedure and surgery, pain management, wound care, nursing and care of patients with surgical diseases; patient safety, skills and knowledge how to use different devices in surgical nursing
Written exam is after theory, skills labs and simulations
PERIOPERATIVE NURSING:
perioperative process (pathway of elective and emergency patient, ambulatory patient) ,roles and tasks of anesthetic nurse, scrub nurse and circulating nurse. environment of theatres, the principles of aseptic care (surgical hand disinfection, use of sterile gown, surgical site skin disinfection, preparing a sterile table, respecting of sterile area), anesthesia methods (general anesthesia, spinal – and epidural, local anesthesia), observation of anesthetized patient in the theatre and recovery room, documentation and reporting , drug and fluid care (general anesthesia drugs, local anesthetics, pain medication, infusions), pain management methods (epidural, PCA, plexus, VAS), main instruments and equipment (diatermia, suction, c-arm), interaction and counselling situations with the patient, patient safety (physical and phycological), nurse’s occupational safety
GYNECOLOGICAL NURSING: Reproductive health at different stages of woman’s lifespan, the most common examinations and procedures performed at the outpatient clinic, family planning, STD’s, early pregnancy disorders, inducted abortion, infertility, sexual violence, tumors, endometriosis, the most common gynecological procedures

Further information

Surgical nursing: Skills labs and simulations are compulsory. The student must do those with another group, if she/ he misses the classes. Attendance on theory lecture is compulsory.

- is capable of client-centred, responsible and safe clinical practice
- applies alternative solutions to decision-making in client-centred clinical nursing
- evaluates action and safety in client-centred clinical nursing based on professional ethical principles of nursing/public health nursing
- acts as an expert of client-centred clinical nursing in multidisciplinary teams and projects in collaboration with people who represent different cultures
