Timber Structures 1 (5cr)

Course unit code: KC05BR20702

General information

Credits
5 cr

Objective

Students will be able to design common load-bearing timber structures. They will know how to determine the static model of the structures and be able to make load combinations to be examined at the ultimate limit state and at the service limit state using Eurocodes. Students will know the distinctive properties of wood when dimensioning load-bearing wooden structures. The course is part of the theoretical training required of A-level structural designers.

Content

? Properties of materials
? Structural designing of load-bearing timber structures
? Static models of structures and actions of structures
? Massive beams, columns, glued, thin-laminated beams, double tapered beams and single tapered beams, wooden trusses
? Design at the ultimate limit state for bending, shear and normal force, as well as for combined stresses
? Design at the service limit state for bending and vibration
? Utilising software in designing and dimensioning wooden structures

Qualifications

Statics, Strength of Materials, Framework Systems and Basics of Structural Design.
