Promotion of Respiratory and Cardiovascular Functions in Physiotherapy (8cr)
Course unit code: BB00EA27
General information
- Credits
- 8 cr
- Teaching language
- Finnish
Objective
The student
- is able to apply knowledge of how lifestyle factors affect the risk factors of arterial diseases when planning and implementing the patient’s physiotherapy process.
- is able to assess common diseases of the respiratory and circulatory systems, recognize their specific characteristics and use evidence-based information in physiotherapy planning.
- is able to perform assessments that evaluate the function and performance of the respiratory and circulatory systems, and to analyze and interpret the results using well-grounded reasoning in physiotherapy.
- is able to find solutions to draw conclusions about the effects of cardiovascular diseases on the patient’s functional capacity, on physiotherapy planning, on its safe implementation, and on evaluating its effectiveness.
- is able to provide appropriate physiotherapeutic guidance and counselling in the rehabilitation of cardiac and respiratory patients as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- is able to recognize a patient’s fear of movement, use situation-appropriate guidance methods, and support the patient individually in engaging in physical activity through exercise-based rehabilitation.
- is able to select and apply safe and appropriate physiotherapy methods in the pre- and postoperative rehabilitation of sternotomy patients.
- is able to assess the effects of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in cardiac and respiratory patients and take these into account when implementing safe and effective physiotherapy.
- is able to assess the effects of key Internal Medicine conditions (metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, and cancer) on the client’s functional capacity and apply this knowledge in the physiotherapy process.
- is able to select and apply digital guidance and remote rehabilitation methods safely and ethically in the physiotherapy of respiratory and cardiac patients.

- Risk factors and the most common diseases of the respiratory and circulatory systems
- Physiotherapy and exercise-based rehabilitation for respiratory and circulatory disorders
- Tests assessing the functional capacity and performance of cardiac and respiratory patients, and interpretation of the results
- Multidisciplinary hospital, recovery, and maintenance phase rehabilitation for cardiac patients
- Identifying and managing fear of movement in respiratory and cardiac patients
- Common lifestyle-related diseases affecting the circulatory system, and skills in counselling and guidance
- The role of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of lifestyle-related diseases and cancer
- Pre- and postoperative physiotherapy for sternotomy patients
- Cardiac medications and non-pharmacological treatment for cardiac and respiratory patients
- Digital remote rehabilitation methods in cardiac and respiratory physiotherapy
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Student:
- is able to use knowledge to some extent about the effects of lifestyle on the risk factors of arterial diseases when planning and implementing the patient’s physiotherapy process.
- is able to assess the typical diseases of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems to some extent, recognise some of their key characteristics, and use this knowledge to some extent in physiotherapy planning.
- is able to carry out assessments of respiratory and cardiovascular function and performance to some extent, and has a limited ability to analyse and interpret the results in physiotherapy.
- finds solutions to some extent to draw conclusions about how cardiovascular diseases affect the client’s functional capacity, physiotherapy planning, safe implementation, and evaluation of effectiveness.
- is able to provide appropriate physiotherapeutic guidance and counselling to some extent in the rehabilitation of cardiac and respiratory patients as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- recognises the patient’s fear of movement to some extent, uses suitable guidance methods inconsistently, and considers the patient’s individual needs to some extent when supporting physical rehabilitation.
- recognises safe and appropriate physiotherapy methods to some extent in the pre- and postoperative rehabilitation of sternotomy patients.
- recognises the effects of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in cardiac and respiratory patients to some extent and only partly takes them into account in the safe and effective implementation of physiotherapy.
- recognises to some extent how major internal medicine conditions (metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea and cancer) affect the client’s functional capacity and applies this knowledge to some extent in the physiotherapy process.
- recognises digital guidance and telerehabilitation methods only to some extent and uses them safely and ethically at a basic level in the physiotherapy of cardiac and respiratory patients.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Student
- - is able to use knowledge of how lifestyle factors influence the risk factors of arterial diseases when planning and implementing the patient’s physiotherapy process.
- knows the typical diseases of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, demonstrates a developing ability to recognise their key characteristics, and progressively applies this knowledge in physiotherapy planning.
- has a developing ability to carry out assessments of respiratory and cardiovascular function and performance, and shows an emerging ability to analyse and interpret the results in physiotherapy.
- identifies developing solutions to draw conclusions about how cardiovascular and respiratory diseases affect the client’s functional capacity, physiotherapy planning, safe implementation, and evaluation of effectiveness.
- demonstrates a developing ability to provide appropriate physiotherapeutic guidance and counselling in the rehabilitation of cardiac and respiratory patients as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- shows a developing ability to recognise the patient’s fear of movement, to use suitable guidance methods, and to support the patient in engaging in physical rehabilitation.
- recognises and progressively applies safe and appropriate physiotherapy methods in the pre- and postoperative rehabilitation of sternotomy patients.
- knows the effects of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in cardiac and respiratory patients and increasingly takes these into account in the safe implementation of physiotherapy.
- knows and progressively considers how major internal medicine conditions (metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea and cancer) affect the client’s functional capacity, and applies this knowledge at a developing level in the physiotherapy process.
- knows digital guidance and telerehabilitation methods and demonstrates a developing ability to use them safely and ethically in the physiotherapy of cardiac and respiratory patients.
