Electrical Measurements (3cr)
Course unit code: 8A00DZ34
General information
- Credits
- 3 cr
- Teaching language
- Finnish
Objective
After completing the course, the student is able to perform basic electrical and process engineering measurements safely and correctly. Based on the obtained measurement results, the student can identify and locate potential faults and tune the equipment to operate in an energy-efficient manner. The student takes sustainable development principles into account in both measurements and equipment use – for example, by selecting measurement devices that are long-lasting and maintainable. The student is able to consider the effects of external disturbances on measurement results while carrying out measurements. In addition, the student is familiar with the characteristics and application possibilities of computer-based measurement devices in various contexts.
Content
- Electrical quantities and their measurement using various instruments (multimeter, oscilloscope, RLC meter, analyzer, calibration equipment, PC-based measurement devices).
- Practical measurement exercises.
- Consideration of factors affecting measurement results.
- Measurement accuracy and disturbance factors; various troubleshooting methods.
- Factors related to the selection of measurement instruments.
Qualifications
Electrical Engineering, Basics of Electronics, or equivalent knowledge and skills.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student describes the measurement methods for basic electrical quantities and performs practical measurements safely using a multimeter and an oscilloscope. In addition, the student is able to calibrate analog and digital measurement transmitters according to given instructions.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student, in addition to the above, is familiar with and applies troubleshooting methods. They describe modern measurement instruments and use them independently. The student performs automation-related measurements according to instructions using PC-based measurement systems. The student describes the significance of equipment selection and its impact on the longevity and energy efficiency of the system.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student independently searches for, selects, and applies measurement instruments and applications for various automation measurement tasks. They assess the condition of process measurement devices and, when necessary, tune and calibrate them. The student positions measurement devices in locations compliant with relevant standards. They take sustainable development principles into account in measurement activities – selecting long-lasting, maintainable devices and optimizing energy efficiency.
