Objective

Students will be able to define mechanisms that cause social, mental and health problems and understand their impact on people's and their immediate community's well-being, everyday coping and ability to function. Students will recognize and have the ability to assess the impact that social, physical and psychological problems have on individuals, community and society. They will be able to analyze factors that contribute to preventive work.

Content

- Social exclusion, poverty, crime and unemployment
- Illness (e.g. diabetes, dementing illnesses, cardiovascular illnesses, cancer, musculoskeletal disorders, accidents), pain and sleep
- Depression, neurosis, psychosis, personality disorders and burnout
- Promotion of good physical and mental health and prevention of social problems

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Grade 1-2:
Students are able to name essential concepts related to social, public health and mental health problems. They recognize mechanisms that cause social, health and mental health problems and understand their impact on the individual, community and society. Students are aware of factors that contribute to the prevention of these problems.
Grade 3-4:
Students are able to define what social, public health and mental health problems involve. They know how to explain mechanisms that cause social, health and mental health problems and their combined impact. Students are able to evaluate factors that contribute to prevention of these problems.
Grade 5:
Students are able to critically and extensively evaluate connections between social, public health and mental health problems. Students analyse connections between various preventive methods and mechanisms that cause problems.
