Objective

Student is able to recognize and analyze the business possibilities related to the food value chain. The student is able to interpret current factors which affect operation and possibilities of the future. The student produces independently or in teams an idea description which meets the criteria of the competition. The student is able to develop and justify the idea with the following criteria:
- Uniqueness and added value of the idea
- Market opportunities or demand
- Target group, customers
- Features of the service/product
- Business and risks
- Know-how needed to put the idea into practice
- Sustainability

Content

Fully online course. The student considers the online material (sustainable food solutions, megatrends, developing business idea) and produces their own idea to a description that meets the competition criteria. This can be done independently or in student teams. The learning tasks of the course form the idea description to the competition. (It is also possible to take the course without participating the competition.)

Qualifications

: No previous studies are required.

Assessment criteria: Approved / Failed
Approved:
The student carries out the tasks of the course and creates an idea description that meets the competition criteria, and returns the assignments on time. (2ect) If the student gets to the final stage of the competition, they can apply for additional 1ect (3ect in total)
Fail:
The student does not compete the tasks on time. The student does not show the knowledge or skills required.

Food Business Challenge is a national competition for students in Finland, organized by Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences, School of Food and Agriculture. The competition searches new business ideas for the food sector. Theme of the competition is sustainable food solutions. In the competition there are money prizes.
