Objective
The student
- is able to act based on evidence in multiprofessional acute care work, taking into account client and patient safety, ethical requirements, and the principles of sustainable development.
- part of identifying the nursing needs of patients and their families when planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting the nursing work.
- knows the structure of the acutely and critically ill persons' health care system, the cooperation between authorities, and the typical treatment paths of various acute patient groups.
- uses evidence-based information and nursing technology and equipment.
Content
Care and service system for acutely ill patients, main concepts and different care situations for cardiac, respiratory and neurological acute patients.
Assessment of the patient's status by using cABCDEF-protocol.
Securing patient´s vital functions.
Monitoring the patient, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care. Verbal and written reporting and documentation.
Triage in hospital acute care.
Reporting by using ISBAR-protocol.

- is able to describe some elements in the care and service provision system for acutely and critically ill patients, and the collaboration between authorities.
- under supervision, recognizes changes and problems in vital functions and knows how to carry out nursing interventions to help patients with respiratory or cardiac failure and in neurological situations. Is able to report verbally and in writing.
- under supervision, can plan and carry out safely intravenous fluid and drug care of acutely and critically ill patients.
- under supervision, can apply nursing technology client- / patient-safely.
- under supervision, can encounter and counsel acutely and critically ill patients and their next-of-kin.

- can identify changes and disorders of basic vital functions and can implement nursing methods to help patients with acute respiratory and circulatory failure as well as acute neurological situations and report on them verbally and in writing.
- is able to implement safe intravenous fluid and drug therapy under supervision and evaluate their effectiveness in the care of acutely and critically ill patients.
- knows how to use treatment technology under guidance, taking into account customer and patient safety.
- knows how to deal with and counsel acutely and critically ill patients and their next-of-kin professionally.
