Objective

Students are familiar with the basic research methods of business economics. They can explain and compare the differences between quantitative and qualitative research methods and are familiar with different qualitative methods. They will be able to design a research project using quantitative or qualitative methods, will be able to collect the necessary data, properly analyze the results, report and interpret the results. They recognize the difference between research and development. They know the goals and methods of development work. Students will find and know how to use Finnish and international sources related to the tasks of the course. They are able to critically evaluate different studies and their results.

Content

- Quantitative research process, including sampling, questionnaire design, statistical methods suitable for the research material , analyzing and reporting the results of a quantitative research
- Special features of qualitative research, process and methods, analyzing and reporting the results of a qualitative research
- Purpose of a development work, methods for the implementation of a development project, reporting and evaluation of the project
- Evaluation of the research

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student actively takes part in the course and completes all exercises and tasks. The student completes the assignments required at least at a satisfactory level. The student understands the differences between different types of research. The student can compare the differences between a research work and a development project. The student can plan a research using qualitative and/or quantitative research methods. The student can apply some typical data collection method and analyze and report the results acquired in a proper way.
