Objective
Learning Outcomes of the Course
The student can communicate in some typical professional situations with patients and colleagues. He/she understands easy texts related to work and can write coherent texts on professional topics. The student enhances his/her spoken Finnish skills related to professional topics both in informal and formal situations.
The target level of the course is B1.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Content
Course Contents
Interactive communication situations, talking about everyday life at work, e.g., medication, pain, vital signs, patient cases; instructions, forms, reporting
Grammar: standard vs. spoken Finnish, expressions for the level of certainty, use of participles, use of passive voice, complex sentences
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
1-2 The student manages and can communicate both in spoken and written Finnish in everyday life and routine professional situations, if he/she gets help. The student understands some basic professional texts and can write texts. However, he/she makes mistakes in grammatical structures, that causes misunderstanding and complicate communication. He/she has a command of some basic nursing vocabulary. Other languages strongly influence the pronunciation. However, the pronunciation is understandable, though sometimes inaccurate in special terminology.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
3-4 The student manages and can communicate fluently both in spoken and written Finnish in the most common everyday life and professional situations. The student understands main ideas of professional contents and can write mostly coherent and grammatically flawless texts. He/she has mostly a good command of nursing vocabulary. The pronunciation is mainly understandable.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
5 The student manages and can communicate accurately and fluently both in spoken and written Finnish in the most common everyday life and professional situations. The student understands main ideas of professional contents and can write coherent and grammatically flawless text. He/she has a good command of nursing vocabulary. The pronunciation is close to that of a native speaker.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
Fail
The student does not achieve the learning outcomes at a satisfactory level.
