Rock and Soil MechanicsLaajuus (5 cr)

Code: 8D00DI90

Objective

Occupational and environmental safety in construction
Students are aware of the impact of site preparation (e.g. clearing, excavation, quarrying) on occupational and environmental safety.

Competence in the construction process
Students understand the role of geotechnics and foundation construction as part of a construction project, and take into consideration their effect on the total cost of the project.

Competence in structural engineering
Students know the important building properties of various types of soil and the impact the soil and the working conditions have on the earthwork. Students know the work stages and methods in earthwork. They know how to choose the necessary machinery and equipment. They know the concepts related to volume and mass coefficients in earthwork.

Content

- Construction properties of soil
- Appropriate machinery for earthwork
- Execution of the earthwork project.
- Important stages of earthwork (e.g. clearing, excavation, quarrying, piling, filling and compaction, plumbing, yard structures and preparing the area)
- Compatibility of the loading and transport machinery
- Concepts of volume and mass coefficients
- Effect of contaminated soil on construction

Qualifications

Basics of Geotechnics and Foundation Engineering (Construction Site Management)
Geotechnics and Foundation Engineering. (Construction Engineering)

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student knows the basic things about geotechnics and foundation engineering. The student knows the work phases and work methods of earthwork.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Based on source material, the student is able to calculate the dimensions of a building and building lot and, based on that, to place the building in the lot. The student is able to apply mass coefficients and volume concepts based on given assignments.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the abilities above, the student masters well what they have learned and is able to apply it. The are also to analyze connections between different things. Teh student can make diversified analyses and draw conclusions based on what they have learned.
