Objective

COMPETENCE IN CUSTOMERSHIP IN NURSING, ETHICAL COMPETENCE

Students will analyse their thinking and attitudes towards intoxicants and drug abuse. Students will gain an overview of addictive substances and practices and the underlying factors by exploring people's relationship with intoxicants, addiction and pleasure. They will study the development of addiction. Students will follow the ethical guidelines of their profession.

COMPETENCE IN HEALTH PROMOTION, DECISION-MAKING COMPETENCE AND COUNSELLING AND MENTORING COMPETENCE

Students will learn to detect addictions in clients and to address the problem. Students will counsel, support and assist individual people, groups, families and communities to discover resources for life without intoxicants.

CLINICAL COMPETENCE

Students will be able to describe the most important principles, interventions and treatments in the management of drug abuse.

LEARNING COMPETENCE

Students will evaluate and develop their competence and learning strategies. They will know how to seek, use and evaluate knowledge critically.

Content

The course discusses the relationship between addictive substances and people, pleasure, addiction/freedom from addiction, the development of addiction, substances and practices that cause addiction, Ways and levels of using intoxicants, Intervention by addressing the topic, Pharmagological and non-pharmagological care. Cognitive and other therapeutical interventions. Mini-intervention. Multiprofessional collaboration. The service provision system.

- having extensively studied addiction and development of dependence, have an overview of addictive substances and practices and of the background factors in addiction
- recognize addiction, know how to address the problem professionally and are able to help individuals and families in discovering resources for life without drugs
- know how to approach, support and help professionally individuals, groups, families and communities, using evidence-based knowledge and explaining their actions
- have an overview of and are able to analyse critically interventions, service provision and legislation in management of drug abuse

- do not know how to approach, support or help professionally individuals, groups, families and communities
-are not able to name examples of interventions, service provision and legislation in management of drug abuse
