Objective

Occupational and environmental safety in construction
Students are aware of the impact of site preparation (e.g. clearing, excavation, quarrying) on occupational and environmental safety.

Competence in the construction process
Students are able to take civil engineering into account as part of a construction project and are able to consider its impact on the project costs. They are able to use various measuring instruments and perform measurements with them. They are able to measure the location and elevation of a building based on source material.

Competence in structural engineering
Students will learn about the most important earthwork properties of soil materials and how they and working conditions affect earthwork. Students will learn about the stages and methods of earthwork. Students will learn how to choose the right equipment for earthwork. Students are familiar with the volume concepts and mass coefficients related to earthworks. Students are familiar with the investigation methods and conventional treatment techniques for contaminated soil, as well as the application of the principles of sustainable development in earthworks and foundation engineering.

Content

- soil properties in earthworks
- earthmoving machinery and its dimensioning
- implementation of earthworks projects.
- key stages of earthworks (e.g., clearing, excavation, quarrying, piling, filling and compaction, pipe installation, yard structures, and site preparation)
- coordination of loading and transport equipment
- volume concepts and mass coefficients used in earthworks.
- the impact of contaminated soil on construction
- assessment of the usability of surplus soil and planning its use
- mechanism of excavation vibration and its impact on structures, as well as vibration caused by traffic/construction
- key measuring instruments and their use
- measuring the location of a plot and a building
- laboratory and field measurement exercises

Qualifications

Basics of Geotechnics and Foundation Engineering (Construction Site Management)
Geotechnics and Foundation Engineering. (Construction Engineering)

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students know the basic things about geotechnics and foundation engineering. They know the work phases and work methods of earthwork.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students know how to use and apply measuring instruments for different measurement needs. Students know how to apply mass coefficients and volume concepts to given tasks.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the abilities above, students master well what they have learned and are able to apply it.
