Timber Structures 2 (5cr)
Course unit code: RAK2J2
General information
- Credits
- 5 cr
- Teaching language
- Finnish
Objective
Competence in the construction process
Students can use computer programmes in the dimensioning of timber structures.
Competence in structural engineering
Students are able to dimension joints in timber structures assembled with mechanical fasteners. Students are able to dimension more demanding timber structures..
Content
- joints in timber structures (joints assembled with mechanical couplers: connections with nails, screws, bolts, and dowels)
- shear-loaded, longitudinally loaded, and shear- and moment-loaded dowel connections.
- dimensioning of beams with varying heights, effect of holes and notches
- bracing of timber structures (dimensioning of buckling and overturning supports)
- use of application programs in the design and dimensioning of timber structures
- laboratory work
Qualifications
Timber Structures 1.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Students are able to use the Eurocode for timber structures in basic beam design situations. Students understand the principles of bracing design.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Students are able to apply the Eurocode for timber structures in the dimensioning of beam structures with varying heights, the dimensioning of joints, and combined stress cases, also taking stability into account. Students are able to perform bracing dimensioning.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Students are able to apply the Eurocode for timber structures excellently in the dimensioning of beam structures with varying heights, in the dimensioning of more demanding connections, and in combined stress cases, also taking stability into account. Students are able to perform bracing dimensioning.
